What will happen to EDG if another team wins Worlds this year?

The 2022 Season World Championship rulebook clearly states in article 6.5.4 Final round that whoever wins 2022 Worlds will be considered the 2021 champion.

So what will happen to EDG? Will we be removing their skins? Will we consider them as never having won Worlds?

We truly live in a society

They wanted to make things more interesting so from now on, every year we'll crown the 2021 champions. If teams want to defend their title and skins, they gotta just stay on top!

The skins get removed from the game if you lose your 2021 championship and no refunds for anyone that bought any.

1

u/s0mthinG_ Oct 03 '22

They get put back and given back to the people who bought them if the team wins again (ie. EDG loses and their skins go poof, they win again in 2023 and the new skins, plus the old ones come back)

47

u/frosthowler Oct 02 '22

That's how double elimination works / the bad side.

13

u/cthorrez Oct 02 '22

It's how Riot's "double elimination" works. In some esports like Rocket League and Smash they do real double elim where you remain in contention until you are eliminated twice.

1

u/Tanriyung Oct 02 '22

That's because smash and rocket league bo5 and bo7 are still pretty short, in league a sigle bo5 can last 4+ hours.

Obviously not a feasible thing to get real double elim in that case.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '22

[deleted]

1

u/Zaphod424 Oct 02 '22

Yeah but the argument that double elim works for games like rocket league or fighting games is moot. It isn’t a one size fits all, and the solution of just having a reset is not feasible for league. Hence double elim is not feasible for league, without having massive drawbacks

2

u/NenBE4ST Oct 02 '22

I consider it a 40-60 anyways not a 1-1. Not every match is weighted equally in finals. Both teams know grand finals is do or die

-10

u/aetheriality Oct 02 '22

yea its actually counterproductive to stay in winners bracket

18

u/kbj17 Oct 02 '22

Only in shitty formats that don’t have a bracket reset for grand finals

12

u/Veamous Oct 02 '22

It's pretty fucking stupid production wise to have a reset for league. You either have the teams play 10 hours on a row, or rent the finals venue for the next day as well in case there's a reset.

0

u/kbj17 Oct 02 '22

If it were me, I would probably give the teams a 1-2 hour break before the second series of grands. Only other thing you could do to make double elim feel fair for the winners bracket winner would be an advantaged final.

I wonder if these types of questions are why Riot sticks to single elim.

18

u/lolKronch1 Oct 02 '22

Bracket resets and map advantages are fucking stupid for league of legends and while I want a losers bracket the traditional advantages of being in uppers don’t translate well at all to LoL

10

u/kbj17 Oct 02 '22

That’s kind of my point. League isn’t really a game the supports double elim well (unless you’re doing BO3s maybe I guess?) but people continue to ask for it year after year. Double Elim in league would probably only work logistically if grands was an advantaged BO7 but that will never happen, nor will a bracket reset. Advantaged BO5 is pretty silly. 2-0 stomp would be anti-hype.

2

u/UX1Z Oct 02 '22

Other games have double elim in the earlier parts of the tournament but cut it off for semis onwards. At least that...

→ More replies

6

u/Zaphod424 Oct 02 '22

Probably, because they’re fatal flaws with the double elim format, either you have an unfair format against the upper bracket teaM, or you have to for example give a free game win, which detracts from the final being the 2 final teams battling it out on equal footing for the championship. It can’t be solved.

Imo we should have single elim but with an extra round of 16, having all 24 teams in groups (scrap play in), 6 teams per group, top 4 go through to round of 16, then quarters etc.

8 more BO5s and none of the issues with double elim

0

u/onmyouza Oct 02 '22

If it were me, I would probably give the teams a 1-2 hour break before the second series of grands.

In dota, they hold the lower bracket final and the grand final on the same day. It's quite a good compromise, but I like your idea better.

2

u/Sersch Oct 02 '22

yeah totaly counterproductive, having to play less games, having less chance to lose, having not give away your strats in those additional matches.

2

u/unknowingchuck Oct 02 '22

And that goes all out the window if the winner side team loses. So now what do they get? Nothing but being sent home without a second chance like other teams got. You right they have less chances to lose but they only get one chance come finals.

1

u/Sersch Oct 02 '22

They only get one chance to lose the finals, no matter if they came from losers or from winners side. You really need to split the tournament into two phases:

  1. getting into final

  2. playing the final

What happens in 1. phase doesn't matter for the 2. phase. Losing in the first phase is just not equal to losing in the finals.

1

u/shrubs311 Oct 02 '22

most teams aren't hiding strats in semifinals though anyways. "hiding strats" hasn't mattered in any playoffs i've seen this whole year

-2

u/Sersch Oct 02 '22

It's really not just about hiding strats, LoL drafts alone are so complex, any useful information you can get on which champions to ban or pick is super useful.

-2

u/ACEPACEACE Oct 02 '22

??? you literally have a cushion and play less games, literally everyone would take winners bracket over losers brackets

0

u/Ulyrres Oct 02 '22

Completely untrue, in a tourney like Worlds where Riot actively creates a new meta for the sake of the tournament, more games is more time to feel out the meta. So unless the winner bracket team has some secret strats that they now get to hide while the loser fights their way to the top, the losing bracket team actually gets more chances to get a good feel for how the meta plays out. We have seen it happen in every region that supports double elim in league

4

u/unknowingchuck Oct 02 '22

Anytime someone brings up they have a cushion just ask them this. Why does one team need to play perfect throughout the whole bracket while other teams don't? How is that fair?

-1

u/sorendiz uzi ming Oct 02 '22

what does the cushion actually do for you when you've made it to finals

32

u/xckevin C9 and Alumni Oct 02 '22

I always read every page of the ToS! Sometimes I take a day off work to relax and get through a few of them :)

15

u/ralguy6 Oct 02 '22

You realise if you don't read the EULA and sign it anyway they could just hide a clause where you have to give all your possessions to them right?

7

u/sorendiz uzi ming Oct 02 '22

sure they could do that

they would get absolutely laughed out of court if they actually tried to enforce it, but they could do it

EULAs arent literally your chance to decree whatever you want by fiat as long as some shmuck clicks yes, they have to do with your rights as related to the product or service in question and to the provider therein

what they can do is stuff like making you agree that they have no liability for whatever happens as a result of you using the product (which is the main purpose of 99.9999999% of all EULAs ever written)

7

u/Qrimesz Oct 02 '22

No, atleast not in EU. Clauses like that hidden in TOS don't do shit, as they aren't allowed.

8

u/ralguy6 Oct 02 '22

Nah man, I am from the EU (my country is in eurovision) and I think I know better than you. You have to extremely carefully read every EULA you sign

9

u/Brain_Tonic So much money and so bad Oct 02 '22

I know you're memeing but a situation like this actually happened in LoL. Don't remember the details but basically a player's contract said they wouldn't get paid under some circumstances. Lawyers voided the contract when the team tried to use this clause, because it's illegal.

An "I take your shit" contract would also be illegal, so you could sign it and it can't legally be enforced.

Good thing we have courts. So no, I don't have to read the ToS book, they can only fuck me in legal ways, which I'm ok with. It essentially boils down to "we have your info and can do whatever we want to your account and you can't sue us" which I'm fine with.

3

u/badtrip426 Oct 03 '22

Why are you being so defensive?

5

u/Imightwantkarma Oct 02 '22

There is no gaslighting in Ba sing se

0

u/Worldly-Duty4521 Oct 03 '22

It's not gaslighting it's called flamethrowing everywhere in world. How are you so wrong

13

u/aeruplay Oct 02 '22

You dont read ToS? Wtf is wrong with you, take some control in your life and make sure you don't just accept whatever someone says. Like, are you a slave or something? Atleast then it would make sense you dont read ToS. ToS is like the shit dude, you have to read it. It's so much fun, i love it. I actually do it everyday, when i wake up, the first thing i do is read ToS, it just energizes me for the day. A page of ToS a day keeps the sun away. You dont want the sun to get too close, do you? Now, go read your ToS page for the day. We all have to contribute man, it's amazing that you havent yet heard of this. Like, it's literally about the survival of all mankind. Dont wanna get fucking roasted bro.

4

No disrespect to EDG, I'm a firm believer that LPL sweeping LCK is a huge fluke and robs DK of truly accomplishing what their capable of. I've spent this last year in pure disbelief and it just doesn't make sense to me. I've spent the entire previous season watching DK play great league it's just not fair.

If DK loses again I will face that EDG deserved the win, but I am just 100% sure it was a fluke and does a big disservice to DK and the League e-sports scene.
